Kakadu Plum Extract

Australia is the source of some of the best natural skincare ingredients in the world. Case in point: kakadu plum extract.

The kakadu plum is a powerhouse fruit native to northern Australia. Not familiar with the name? Then perhaps you know it by one of its other monikers, the gubinge, murunga, or our personal favourite, the billy goat plum. Beyond the fun nicknames, this Aussie fruit has some major benefits for the skin.

Keep reading to discover why you should be working kakadu plum extract into your routine ASAP.

Overview

As mentioned above, this Australian plum originated in the northern part of the country. For centuries, it has been used by indigenous communities in the country as a healer (more on its amazing healing properties below).

Kakadu plum is actually a flowering fruit that looks a bit like a green grape (so basically, nothing like the plums you’re probably used to seeing in the supermarket). Though you may never have heard of this fruit before, it’s time to get used to it as kakadu plum is having a moment in the beauty realm right now.

This on-trend superfruit has quickly risen in popularity owing to the sustainable methods used to harvest it coupled with its antioxidant-packed extract. That’s right, kakadu plum extract is jam packed with vitamin C, as well as a whole host of other vitamins and nutrients. If you decide to add this ingredient into your skincare regimen, look for it in serums, face masks, and facial oils.

Benefits

One of our favourite skin benefits of kakadu plum extract is its anti aging properties.

The ingredient contains 3,000mg of vitamin C per just 100g of fruit. That is twice as much vitamin C as an orange! And you can bet that the results of such a high concentration of vitamin C are nothing short of miraculous. Due to kakadu plum extract’s high vitamin C content, the ingredient has the ability to stimulate collagen production, which sparks the regeneration of skin cells. The effect of this is reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, as well as hiding scarring or pigmentation. Second, as a fruit rich in antioxidants, kakadu plum extract is also fantastic at detoxifying the skin and protecting it from free radicals. In essence, the concentration of antioxidants improve the skin’s natural protective barrier, making it less vulnerable to external damage caused by things like pollution or the sun.

Next, kakadu plum extract is a wonderful ingredient to try if you suffer from acne. That is because the fruit contains both gallic and egallic acid, which makes it a natural antibacterial. As such, it helps to restore the skin’s outermost bayer and balance out an oily complexion. Lastly, in addition to being a natural antibacterial, the Australian extract is also a natural anti-inflammatory. This makes it a great product for those with sensitive skin, as it is extremely soothing and helps reduce redness and irritation.

Safety

Kakadu plum extract is generally considered safe for topical use, so there’s nothing to worry about if you’re adding it into your skincare routine. As with all fruit-based extracts, if you have a fruit allergy, consult your doctor or dermatologist before using it.
