Evening Primrose Oil for Skin: Benefits and Limits
Evening primrose oil is a linoleic-acid-rich plant oil that works as a light, soft emollient. Its reputation as an eczema fix comes mostly from oral capsules, and a Cochrane review found those no better than placebo.
TL;DR
- What it is: an oil pressed from the seeds of Oenothera biennis, a tall yellow wildflower.
- What is in it: mostly linoleic acid, with a smaller share of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
- What it does: softens and conditions the skin surface with a light, quick-absorbing feel.
- The research: oral capsules for eczema were no better than placebo in a Cochrane review, and topical evidence is thin.
- The catch: it is a polyunsaturated oil, so it spoils faster than most. Freshness matters.
- Our position: we don't currently use evening primrose oil in any Dope Skin Co formula.
What is evening primrose oil?
Evening primrose oil is pressed from the seeds of Oenothera biennis, a tall yellow wildflower whose blooms open in the evening. On an ingredient list it appears as Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil.
The oil is mostly linoleic acid, with a smaller share of gamma-linolenic acid, usually shortened to GLA. Both are polyunsaturated fatty acids, which shapes how the oil feels and how quickly it spoils.
What does evening primrose oil do for skin?
In skincare it is an emollient. It softens the skin surface and smooths over dry, flaky patches so skin feels more comfortable.
It feels lighter than a heavy butter, which is why it turns up in face oils and lightweight moisturisers. That is the realistic job description: a pleasant conditioning oil, not a treatment.
Does evening primrose oil help eczema?
This is the claim most people have heard, and it mostly traces back to capsules you swallow. A Cochrane review of oral evening primrose oil and borage oil for eczema found no benefit over placebo.
That review did not test oil applied to the skin, so it does not settle the topical question. Topical evidence is thin, and we would not use any oil as a stand-in for proper care.
If you have eczema, a GP can confirm what you are dealing with and what to use.

Who suits evening primrose oil, and who should be careful?
It suits dry and normal skin that wants a light oil. Oily and breakout-prone skin can use oils too, but add one new product at a time and go slowly.
If you react to plant oils or have a history of contact allergy, patch test first. Our guide to patch testing skincare properly shows how.
Why does evening primrose oil go off so quickly?
Polyunsaturated oils react with oxygen more readily than the firmer fats in butters. Over time that turns the oil rancid, which smells sharp and stale and is more likely to irritate.
Buy small bottles, keep them cool, dark and tightly closed, and bin any oil that smells off.
How do you use evening primrose oil?
Press a few drops into damp skin after a water-based serum, or blend a drop into your moisturiser. A little goes a long way.
Oils sit on the surface, so they work best as the last step of a routine. If you like plant oils, sweet almond oil, rosehip oil and jojoba oil are worth comparing.
Safety and typical concentration range
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) concluded in 2017 that 244 plant-derived fatty acid oils, including evening primrose oil, are safe as used in cosmetics.
The usual caution applies to any leave-on plant oil. Patch test first, and stop if your skin stings or reddens.
Do we use evening primrose oil at Dope Skin Co?
No. We don't currently use evening primrose oil in any of our formulas.

FAQ
Is evening primrose oil the same as the capsules?
It is the same type of oil, but capsule oil is made to be swallowed. We would choose an oil made for skin, where you can see how fresh it is.
Is evening primrose oil good for oily skin?
It is a light oil, but any oil can feel like too much on oily skin. Patch test and start with a drop or two.
Is evening primrose oil vegan?
Yes. It comes from the seeds of a plant.
How do I know if it has gone off?
Use your nose. Rancid oil smells sharp and stale, and it is time to throw it out.
