Chlorphenesin in Skincare: A Preservative, Explained

Chlorphenesin is a preservative that keeps skincare free of bacteria and fungi, often alongside other preservatives. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel found it safe as used, at up to 0.32% in rinse-off and 0.3% in leave-on products.

TL;DR

  • What it is: a lab-made preservative with antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi.
  • What it does: stops water-based products spoiling, so a cream or serum stays usable.
  • The research: the CIR panel concluded in 2014 that it is safe in the present practices of use and concentration.
  • Typical levels: up to 0.32% in rinse-off and up to 0.3% in leave-on products.
  • Who should care: people who react to preservatives, who should patch test new formulas.
  • Our position: we don't currently use it.

What is chlorphenesin?

Chlorphenesin is a synthetic preservative. It appears on labels simply as chlorphenesin, often near the end of the ingredient list.

It is used in creams, lotions, cleansers and serums, usually as one part of a wider preservation system.

Because it is used at low levels and works alongside other ingredients, you will rarely see it as the only preservative in a formula. It is a team member, not a solo act.

Why do skincare products need a preservative?

Any product with water in it can grow bacteria, yeast and mould. A preservative keeps that in check, which protects both the formula and your skin.

A contaminated product is a bigger risk to skin than a well-chosen preservative. That is why preservative-free is rarely the better choice for a jar or bottle.

How does chlorphenesin work with other preservatives?

Formulators rarely rely on one preservative. They combine two or three so each can be used at a lower level.

You will often see chlorphenesin near ingredients such as phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin. Together they form a broader shield than any one alone.

How can you tell if a preservative is doing its job?

You usually cannot see it working, but you can see when it has failed. A changed smell, colour or texture, or any visible mould, means the product should go in the bin.

Store products away from heat and direct sun, and use clean hands or a spatula for jars. Good habits take pressure off any preservation system.

Is chlorphenesin safe for sensitive skin?

The CIR review found it safe at typical use levels, and most people tolerate it. As with any preservative, a small number of people react.

If a product stings or leaves your skin red, stop using it. Our patch testing guide shows how to test before you commit.

How do you use chlorphenesin?

You never use it alone. It is built into the product, so follow the directions on the label.

Check the period-after-opening symbol and keep products away from water and fingers. Good habits help any preservative do its job.

Safety and typical concentration range

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel published its assessment of chlorphenesin in 2014. It concluded the ingredient is safe in the present practices of use and concentration.

The reported maximum use levels were 0.32% in rinse-off products and 0.3% in leave-on products.

Do we use chlorphenesin at Dope Skin Co?

We don't currently use it. Our preservation systems use phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, depending on the product.
