Resveratrol in Skincare: Promising, but Early Evidence
Resveratrol is a plant polyphenol and antioxidant best known from grape skins. The lab and animal work is promising, but human data on creams is limited and the ingredient is unstable in light.
TL;DR
- What it is: a polyphenol made by plants such as grapes, used in skincare as an antioxidant.
- Best evidence: cell and animal studies, with only a few small human trials.
- The catch: it is unstable under UV light and with changes in pH and temperature.
- Delivery: low water solubility makes it hard to formulate well.
- One small trial: a 20-person split-face acne study reported fewer blemishes on the resveratrol side.
- Our position: we don't currently use resveratrol in any Dope Skin Co formula.
What is resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a polyphenol that plants such as grapes produce. It is used in skincare as an antioxidant.
You may also see it in supplements, which is a separate conversation from skincare.
What does resveratrol do for skin?
In cell studies, resveratrol reduced reactive oxygen species in skin cells and protected against UVA and UVB damage. In rats, a topical suspension reduced UVB-induced wrinkling.
Those results are a long way from a person using a cream. They show a reason for interest, not a guaranteed outcome on skin.

Does resveratrol work in a cream?
The human evidence is thin. A 2023 review in Cosmetics cites one cream study in volunteers that reported better hydration, luminosity and elasticity, but gives no sample size or design.
The authors state that a lack of clinical trials is a key gap. The summary is encouraging, early and underpowered.
What about resveratrol and acne?
The same review describes a small split-face study of 20 patients. A resveratrol hydrogel went on one side of the face for 60 days and a plain vehicle on the other.
The resveratrol side showed a larger drop in acne scores and a reduction in microcomedone area, with no side effects reported. It is a single small study, so it needs repeating before anyone should lean on it.
Why is resveratrol hard to formulate?
It is unstable when exposed to UV light, and it is sensitive to pH and temperature. It also dissolves poorly in water.
Researchers are testing nanocarriers to protect it and help it reach the skin. Those results are mostly in lab models, and their safety in people is not established.
Who should be careful with resveratrol?
Anyone with reactive skin should patch test, as with any new active. Start with a small area on the inner forearm.
If you are curious about the supplement form, that is a question for your doctor or pharmacist.
How do you use resveratrol?
Follow the product directions and add it as one new step at a time. Store it in a dark, cool place, since light degrades it.
It does not replace sunscreen. Use it alongside a daily SPF, not instead of one.
Safety and typical concentration range
There is no standard dose to quote for topical resveratrol, and brands use very different levels. The review's trials used specific research formulas that are not the same as a shop product.
A higher number on the label means little without stability data behind it.
Do we use resveratrol at Dope Skin Co?
No, we don't currently use resveratrol in any of our formulas. Plant antioxidants we do use include green tea extract and pomegranate extract.

FAQ
Is resveratrol the same as red wine?
Resveratrol is one compound found in grape skins. Drinking wine and putting resveratrol on your skin are not comparable.
Is resveratrol better than vitamin C?
There is no head-to-head human evidence we would trust. They are different antioxidants with different strengths and limits.
Can I use resveratrol with retinol?
Many routines combine antioxidants and retinoids. Add one at a time and watch how your skin responds.
Why does the colour or smell of resveratrol products change?
Degradation from light and air can change a product, which is why dark packaging matters.
