Bisabolol in Skincare: What It Does and Who Should Be Careful

Bisabolol is a gentle, chamomile-associated ingredient that formulators add to products for sensitive skin. It is a quiet supporting player: widely used, well tolerated by most people, and reviewed as safe at typical cosmetic levels.

TL;DR

  • What it is: an oily alcohol found in chamomile and also made synthetically, often listed as alpha-bisabolol.
  • What it does: it is used in calming and sensitive-skin formulas as a soothing supporting ingredient.
  • The research: the CIR panel reaffirmed in 2017 that bisabolol is safe as used.
  • Typical levels: reported use runs from 0.00002% up to 1%.
  • Who should be careful: people allergic to chamomile or other daisy-family plants.
  • Our position: we don't currently use it.

What is bisabolol?

Bisabolol is a fragrant, oily alcohol. It occurs in German chamomile and can also be made in a lab.

On a label it usually appears as bisabolol or alpha-bisabolol. It is a small part of many formulas rather than the headline act.

What does bisabolol do in skincare?

It is used as a soothing, skin-conditioning ingredient, which is why it turns up in products for reactive or easily flushed skin. It is a supporting player, not a headliner.

It pairs well with other gentle ingredients such as allantoin and panthenol. Together they make a formula feel comfortable on skin.

Is bisabolol good for sensitive skin?

It is a sensible fit. The safety review found it safe at typical use levels, and it has a long record in gentle formulas.

Evidence that it improves a specific skin concern is thinner than its reputation. We would call it a comfort ingredient, not a treatment.

Who should be careful with bisabolol?

If you react to chamomile or other plants in the daisy family, patch test before using a bisabolol product. Blue tansy belongs to the same plant family, so the same caution applies there.

Our guide to patch testing skincare explains the steps.

Can you use bisabolol with stronger actives?

Formulators often include it alongside stronger ingredients to keep a formula feeling comfortable. It is not a shield, though, and it will not cancel out irritation from an acid or retinoid used too often.

Introduce strong actives gradually, whatever else is in the product.

How do you use bisabolol?

You do not apply it on its own. It is built into serums, creams and tonics, so follow the directions on the product.

Introduce one new product at a time. That way, if your skin reacts, you know which product to blame.

Safety and typical concentration range

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel first assessed bisabolol in 1999. In a 2017 re-review it reaffirmed that bisabolol is safe in the present practices of use and concentration.

A 2014 industry survey in that review reported use from 0.00002% to 1%. Leave-on products went up to 1% and rinse-off products up to 0.5%.

The review also noted that bisabolol can increase how well other ingredients penetrate skin. Formulators weigh that when it sits next to stronger actives.

Do we use bisabolol at Dope Skin Co?

We don't currently use it. Our soothing ingredients today include allantoin and panthenol.

FAQ

Is bisabolol the same as chamomile extract?

No. Bisabolol is one component found in chamomile. Chamomile extract is a mix of many compounds.

Is synthetic bisabolol different from the natural kind?

The molecule is the same. The difference is whether it was extracted from a plant or made in a lab.

Can bisabolol cause an allergy?

It can in a small number of people, especially those sensitive to chamomile. Patch test if you are unsure.

Is bisabolol safe in eye-area products?

The CIR review reported use in eye-area products at 0.01% to 0.5%. Follow the product's directions.
